Australian Road Rules

Queensland is a large state, approximately seven times the size of the UK. If you are driving on your holiday please ensure you familiarise yourself with the Queensland road rules at www.tmr.qld.gov.au

In Australia, all vehicles travel on the left hand side of the road in the direction of travel.

  • Speed Limit– Always travel no faster than the signed maximum speed limit.
  • Seatbelts– All occupants of a vehicle must wear seatbelts at all times.
  • Crash Helmets– Motorbike, moped and scooter drivers must wear an Australian approved crash helmet. Bicycle helmets are also compulsory.
  • Hand-held cellular telephone– Drivers are not allowed to use mobile phones whilst driving.
  • Drink-Driving– Avoid drinking alcohol before driving. Australia has strict laws on ‘drink-driving’ and police actively enforce them.

Fraser Island has specific road rules, especially for 4WD vehicles. This information can be found on the Department of Transport website: www.transport.qld.gov.au/fraserisland
